10 Questions to Ask Before You Book a Wedding DJ (From a DJ Who Wants You to Ask Them)

I know this seems backwards. A DJ writing a blog post telling you how to vet DJs? But here's the thing: I would rather you ask me hard questions and book with confidence than sign a contract with someone who can't answer them and have a bad experience on your wedding day.

I've been doing weddings in Humboldt and Del Norte County for over 20 years. I've seen the good, the bad, and the "I can't believe that happened at a wedding." And almost every bad experience I've heard about could have been prevented if the couple had asked the right questions upfront.

So here are 10 questions to ask any DJ before you book. And if they can't answer them clearly, that tells you something.

1. How Many Weddings Have You Done?

Not events. Not club nights. Not birthday parties. Weddings specifically. Because a wedding reception has a completely different flow, energy, and set of expectations than any other event. You want someone who has navigated the pacing of a full wedding day many times. A first year DJ can be great, but you should know what you're getting.

2. Do You Have a Consultation Process?

A real wedding DJ doesn't just send you a price and an invoice. They want to talk to you. They want to understand your vision, your vibe, your music, your timeline. If a DJ quotes you a price without ever asking what you want your wedding to feel like, that's a sign they treat every wedding the same. And your wedding isn't the same as anyone else's.

3. What Does Your Planning Process Look Like?

This is different from the consultation. The consultation is the first conversation. The planning process is everything between booking and the wedding day. Do they have forms for your must play and do not play lists? Do they do a timeline walkthrough? Do they coordinate with your other vendors beforehand? Is there a final planning meeting or call before the wedding? The more structured this process is, the fewer surprises you'll have on the day.

4. Will You Be the DJ at My Wedding, or Will It Be Someone Else?

Most DJ companies put everything on the DJ, but what happens if they happen to be sick on your big day. You want a company that has built a process to handle every detail of your planning. Your timeline, your song selections, every announcement, and every transition. This ensures that whoever the DJ is on your wedding, they will have a complete roadmap built to your exact vision.

5. Have You Worked at My Venue Before?

Local knowledge matters. A DJ who has worked at your venue knows the acoustics, the layout, where to set up for the best sound, whether there are noise restrictions, and what time the hard cutoff is. If they haven't worked your venue, it's not a deal breaker, but ask them what their plan is for learning the space beforehand. A professional will do their homework.

6. Do You Provide Sound for the Ceremony?

Not all DJs do. And if they do, ask about the specifics. Is the ceremony system battery powered (critical for outdoor and remote locations like redwood groves)? What microphone setup do they use? Do they use lavalier mics or a standing mic? How do they handle the transition from ceremony to reception? These details matter more than you think, especially if you're getting married in Humboldt County where outdoor ceremonies in non traditional locations are common.

7. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

Equipment fails sometimes. It's rare with a professional, but it happens. Ask them what their backup plan is. Do they bring backup speakers, backup laptops, backup microphones? What happens if they have a personal emergency and can't make it? Do they have a network of other professionals they can call? The answer to this question tells you how seriously they take their business.

8. How Do You Handle the MC Side of Things?

Playing music and running a reception are two different skills. Ask specifically how they handle the grand entrance, speeches, formal dances, and the transition from dinner to open dancing. A DJ who talks about "reading the room" and "managing the flow" is thinking about the big picture. A DJ who only talks about music might leave the MC duties as an afterthought.

9. Can I See Reviews or Talk to Past Couples?

Google reviews are great. But also ask if they can connect you with a couple who recently used them. Most professional DJs are happy to provide references because they know their couples will say good things. If a DJ hesitates at this question or dodges it, pay attention to that.

10. What's Included in the Price, and What Costs Extra?

Get specific. Does the price include ceremony sound? Does it include a wireless microphone for speeches? How many hours of music? What about setup and breakdown time? Are there travel fees for remote venues? Is lighting included or is that an add on? Understanding exactly what you're getting at each price point helps you compare apples to apples when you're talking to multiple DJs.

Bonus: Trust Your Gut

After you've asked all these questions, pay attention to how the conversation felt. Did the DJ listen to you? Did they ask you questions back? Did they seem genuinely interested in your wedding, or did it feel like a sales pitch? The way a DJ handles your consultation is a preview of how they'll handle your wedding day. If they're attentive, organized, and clearly passionate about what they do, that's going to show up on your day. If they're rushed, vague, or more interested in closing the deal than understanding your vision, that's going to show up too.

At Accurate Productions, we welcome every one of these questions. In fact, we answer most of them before you even have to ask. If you're planning a wedding in Humboldt or Del Norte County, let's have a conversation. Free consultation, no obligation, just a real talk about your wedding.
