Every year, couples spend thousands of dollars flying to destinations like Hawaii, Mexico, or the Caribbean to get married somewhere beautiful. And there's nothing wrong with that. But what if I told you that one of the most stunning, romantic, and truly unique wedding destinations in the country is right here on the North Coast of California, and most people outside of here have no idea?
Welcome to Humboldt County. And once you see what we have, you'll wonder why everybody isn't getting married here.
I'm not being dramatic. I've been DJing weddings in Humboldt County for over 20 years, and redwood ceremonies still get me emotional. There is nothing in the world like standing in a grove of trees that have been alive for over a thousand years while two people promise to spend their lives together. The scale of it, the quiet, the light filtering through the canopy. It's genuinely spiritual in a way that no ballroom or beachfront resort can replicate.
Humboldt County is home to some of the largest and oldest redwood trees on the planet. Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Avenue of the Giants, Jedediah Smith, Prairie Creek. These aren't just parks. They're cathedrals made by nature. And you can get married in them.
Couples travel from all over the country to elope or have intimate weddings in the redwoods. And then they realize that the redwoods are just the beginning of what Humboldt has to offer.
Trinidad. Patrick's Point. Wedding Rock at Sue meg State Park (yes, it's literally called Wedding Rock). Shelter Cove and the Lost Coast. Moonstone Beach. College Cove.
The Humboldt County coastline is dramatic, rugged, and stunningly beautiful. Towering sea stacks, hidden coves, black sand beaches, and cliffs overlooking the Pacific. And unlike Big Sur or Malibu, you're not fighting crowds of tourists and paying resort prices just to have a view.
Imagine saying your vows on a cliff overlooking the ocean with nobody else around. That's not a fantasy here. That's a Tuesday.
One thing that destination wedding couples always mention is how much they love the towns up here. Ferndale is a Victorian village that looks like it was pulled out of a storybook. The gingerbread architecture, the working farms, the local shops. It's the kind of place where your wedding guests will want to explore for days.
Arcata has a college town energy with great restaurants, a beautiful plaza, and a warm community feel. Eureka has Old Town with its galleries, waterfront, and historic buildings. Trinidad is this tiny coastal gem that feels like the edge of the world in the best possible way.
These aren't tourist traps. They're real communities with real character. And when your guests come to Humboldt for your wedding, they're not just attending a ceremony. They're having an experience.
This is what sets Humboldt apart from traditional destination wedding spots. Your wedding here doesn't look like a generic hotel ballroom dressed up with flowers. It looks like your wedding.
Scotia Lodge is a historic lodge surrounded by redwoods. The Benbow Historic Inn sits along the Eel River with a stone bridge and manicured grounds that look like something out of a film. The Carson Mansion is one of the most photographed Victorian mansions in the world. Julia Morgan Redwood Grove is a private historic estate designed by the same architect who built Hearst Castle.
There are ocean view barns in Ferndale. Winery venues tucked into the hills. Beach house venues perched on the bluffs of Trinidad. And then there are the public lands, over 40 units managed by federal, state, and local agencies, many of which allow permitted ceremonies.
The variety is incredible. And because Humboldt isn't an oversaturated wedding market, you're not going to see your venue on 500 other Instagram accounts.
If you're coming from somewhere else, here's what you need to know.
Getting here:Humboldt has a regional airport in Arcata/Eureka (ACV) with direct flights from several California hubs. You can also drive up from San Francisco, which is about five hours, and the drive itself through the Avenue of the Giants is one of the most scenic routes in the state. Many couples turn the drive into part of the experience.
Lodging:Between Airbnbs, vacation rentals, historic inns, and hotels, there are plenty of options for you and your guests. Some venues like Lost Coast Ranch even have on site lodging so your wedding party can stay right where the celebration happens.
Marriage license:You don't need to be a California resident to get married here. You just need a valid ID and both partners present to apply at the county clerk's office. Plan ahead since the clerk's office isn't open on weekends.
Permits:If you're getting married in a state or national park, you'll need a special use permit. The cost ranges from about $100 to $400 depending on the location and group size. A local wedding planner can help you navigate this, since they've done it a hundred times.
Weather:Humboldt County weather is mild year round, usually between 50 and 70 degrees. But it's the North Coast, so fog, mist, and surprise drizzle are part of the package. Many couples love this because it adds atmosphere to the photos. But always have a Plan B location, especially for ceremonies.
Here's something that out of town couples don't always think about: your vendors need to know this terrain. A photographer who knows the light in the redwoods at 3pm is going to get you completely different shots than one who's never been here. A DJ who knows that battery powered ceremony sound is non negotiable for a grove wedding is going to deliver a completely different ceremony experience than one who shows up expecting wall outlets.
Local vendors know the drive times between venues. They know the acoustics at Scotia Lodge. They know where to set up at Patrick's Point so the wind doesn't destroy the sound. They know which Ferndale barn has the best sunset light. That local knowledge isn't just convenient. It's what makes the difference between a good wedding and an unforgettable one.
More and more couples are discovering Humboldt County as a wedding destination. Elopement photographers are writing guides about it. Travel blogs are featuring it. The word is getting out.
But for now, it's still one of those places where you can have a world class wedding experience without the world class price tag or crowds. Where you can get married in a thousand year old redwood grove and then have dinner overlooking the Pacific. Where your guests will text you for months afterward saying it was the most incredible trip they've ever taken.
That's Humboldt County. And it's been here the whole time.
