What Is DJ Uplighting and Why Humboldt County Couples Are Adding It to Their Wedding Packages

If you've been scrolling through wedding inspo on Instagram or Pinterest, you've probably seen those gorgeous reception photos where the entire room is bathed in this warm, romantic glow that matches the wedding colors perfectly. And then you look at the room you actually booked and think, "That's not going to happen for us."

Here's the good news: it absolutely can. And it's probably more accessible than you think.

So What Exactly Is Uplighting?

Uplighting is exactly what it sounds like. Lights placed at the base of walls or columns that point upward, washing the room in color. They're LED, they're wireless, and they can be set to virtually any color you want. Think of it as the difference between eating dinner under fluorescent lights versus eating dinner by candlelight. The food is the same. The experience is completely different.

For weddings, uplighting does a few things at once. It transforms even the most basic reception space into something that looks like it belongs in a magazine. It sets the mood before your guests even sit down. And it ties the visual look of your room to your wedding colors in a way that flowers and table linens alone can't do.

Why It Works So Well in Humboldt County Venues

Here's something I've learned after 20 plus years of doing events on the North Coast: our venues have character, but they don't always have built in ambience for an evening reception.

Scotia Lodge has beautiful bones, but the lighting in the ballroom is functional, not romantic. Barns in Ferndale and Blue Lake are stunning during the day when natural light is coming through, but once the sun goes down, you're dealing with overhead lighting that can feel flat. Even The Carson Mansion, as nice as it is, benefits hugely from some color on the walls to make it feel warm and personal and add to the natural beauty of the space.

That's where uplighting earns its keep. It takes a space your guests have maybe been to a hundred times for other events and makes it feel like they're walking into something special. Something that's uniquely yours.

The Dance Floor Lighting Shift

One of my favorite things we do with lighting is what I call the energy shift. During dinner and formal events, the uplighting is set to your wedding colors. Soft, elegant, romantic. Your photos during this part of the evening are going to look incredible because the room has this beautiful, consistent color palette.

Then, after the formal dances are done and it's time to open up the floor for dancing, we switch all the lighting into full party mode. The uplights start moving through colors, the dance floor lights kick in and sync with the beat of the music, and suddenly the whole room feels different. It's a visual cue to your guests that says, "The formal part is done. It's time to party."

And here's why that matters: you don't have to announce it. You don't have to beg people to dance. The room itself tells them what's happening next. It's subtle and it's powerful.

Wedding DJ Packages: What Usually Comes With What

Most professional wedding DJs in Humboldt County offer tiered packages, and understanding what's in each tier helps you figure out where uplighting fits into your budget.

At the base level, you're typically getting DJ services and a professional sound system for ceremony and reception. That covers your music, your MC work, wireless microphones for speeches, and all the planning that goes into making your timeline flow smoothly.

The next level usually adds lighting. That's your decorative uplighting for the room and dance floor lighting for the party portion of the evening. This is the tier that, in my experience, gives couples the biggest bang for their buck because the visual transformation is dramatic and it shows up in every single one of your reception photos.

The top tier typically bundles in extras like a photo booth, premium lighting packages, or additional services. Whether you need that depends on what other vendors you've already booked and what your priorities are.

Is It Worth It?

Here's how I'd think about it. You're already spending money on flowers, a photographer, a venue, and all the details that make your wedding look and feel like you. Uplighting is the one addition that transforms the entire room, not just a centerpiece or an archway, but every wall, every corner, the whole space. And because it shows up in your photos, you're going to see it every time you look back at your wedding album.

For couples who are having an evening reception, especially in indoor venues, I'd say it's one of the highest return investments in your entire wedding budget. For daytime outdoor weddings where you'll be done before it gets dark, it's obviously less essential.

One More Thing

If you're comparing DJ packages and one company includes uplighting and another doesn't, make sure you're comparing apples to apples. Sometimes the "cheaper" package without lighting ends up being the same price once you add lighting as an add on. And sometimes the package that looks more expensive actually saves you money because it bundles things together.

Always ask what's included. And if it's in your budget, as how much it would be to cover every inch of the walls with your wedding colors.
