Until Being Strong Is Your Only Choice

You might’ve seen him dressed to the nine’s, mixing and scratching behind the turntables. If you’re lucky enough, he DJ’d your wedding and your night was nothing short of amazing. If he’s your friend then you know how blessed you are because Cameron has a way of allowing us to completely be ourselves around him. There is no doubt about it, Cameron Lee Smith, also known as DJ LiveStrong is one of a kind.

I recently had the pleasure of chatting it up with my old friend. We talked about life, business, fatherhood and friendship. He sounded as happy as can be and it’s clear to see why. Cameron is a brand new father. His daughter, Aero Renee Smith is 3 months young and let me tell you, she is a site for sore eyes.

He shared a bizarre story with me about the birth of his daughter and how her name came to be. Just before his daughter was born, sadly, his great grandmother passed away the same day. Cameron and his wife were set on the name, Aero if it was going to be a boy and Reese if it was to be a girl. Visiting his great grandmother for the last time, he mentioned she kept saying the name, Aero.

Though Aero was the name chosen for a boy, his wife and him decided to name their daughter Aero to respect and honor his late great grandmother. Aero’s middle name is Renee, which was the middle name of Aero’s late grandmother who had lost a battle to cancer five years ago. I was beside myself when Cameron told me the meaning of his daughter’s names. Aero means from the heavens and Renee means reborn. I still get chills just thinking about it.

I asked Cameron how he was enjoying fatherhood so far and he said he couldn’t be happier. I thought it was hilarious when he told me he has much more patience for other kids now for this wasn’t always the case with Cameron. Parenthood has a funny way of doing that to us.

Cameron seems to be walking on sunshine these days. He has a beautiful wife, who he says is a natural when it comes to motherhood, a healthy baby girl and a dream job, though he doesn’t think of it as a job at all. Cameron really enjoys what he does for a living. As the operational manager for Accurate Productions, Inc., he mentioned he truly enjoys being a leader and overseeing the operations of the company, and is looking forward to helping his friend and CEO of Accurate Productions, Inc., Ben Herman take the company to new heights.

Cameron is in charge of training and hiring new employees, as well as organizing equipment before events. He helps whoever is in need, but his favorite of all is when he’s behind the turntables doing what he does best. He recently DJ’d my 40th birthday party and I have to say, Cameron knows how to keep the crowd moving. Accurate Productions is lucky to have him on the team.

If I’m not meant to have kids then I will adopt.

Life wasn’t always this wondrous for Cameron. At the age of twelve, Cameron had begun to experience some harrowing headaches. One night, after a football game, the pain was so agonizing he had to be taken to the hospital. It was recommended he go to UCSF, which is where

the doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in Cameron’s brain. After a 13 hour surgery, Cameron remembered waking up and feeling so much pressure behind his eyes to the point he could not focus on anything or anyone.

I could only imagine what his parents were thinking at this time. “My dad was crying and my dad never cries,” said Cameron.

The tumor had been blocking a path to the brain where fluid began to build up. Though the tumor was removed, the fluid was not mobilizing correctly and was pushing on the optic nerve. The doctors decided to perform another surgery right away in which they put in a PV shunt to aid the draining of the fluid. The shunt was put in behind Cameron’s ear and drains to his stomach. The surgery was a success and Cameron’s alluring eyes were able to focus on his supportive family once again.

As he was sharing his story with me, all I could think was “Wow, this kid was in the 8th grade”— the same age as my oldest daughter.

As if this wasn’t enough for Cameron, he now had to endure chemotherapy, a radiation therapy used to kill or damage cancer cells. The side effects are known to be very unpleasant and taxing on the body. At one point, Cameron was being subjected to a very strong chemotherapy. The doctors had asked his parents if they would want to freeze Cameron’s reproductive fluid, because there was a 50/50 chance that Cameron might not be able to have children. Like any good parents would do, they discussed it with their son and wisely he said would adopt if he were unable to have kids. 8th grade, people! The kid was twelve years old!

You were given this life because you are strong enough to live it.

This quote is one of my favorite quotes and unsurprisingly tattooed on the arm of Cameron’s mom, one of my dearest friends, Carmen Sargent.

“There’s just something very special about Cameron. From the moment he was born, people were drawn to him. They showered him with love his entire life. But the best thing about Cam is he gives that back ten fold.”

Cameron’s mom is 100% right on that. Cameron, at the young age off 22 has lived what many can clearly see, a strong life. He is a passionate about his life’s work, adores his wife, Justine and daughter, Aero, and motivates his friends to live life with purpose. There are no “if”s,” “and’s,” or “but’s” about it, Cameron is one of God’s strongest soldiers.

Thank you, Cameron for reminding us how strong we can be in the face of adversity. Your appreciation for life is admired by so many. Keep living strong, DJ LiveStrong. Keep living strong.
