Ladies, take a deep breath and feel free to gape over the precious stone that just landed on your finger. Men, take a few deep breaths. You did it! Enjoy this calm before the storm. You both deserve it.
The moment has finally come. You are betrothed and your commitment to one another has just bumped up a serious level. But like all moments; they come and go. Now don’t go getting sad on me. You can stretch the moment out. Ride the wave of excitement if you will.
Go ahead and do your family the honor and make that call to your parents. After all, they have loved and supported you your entire life. Friends will want to congratulate you. Your close friends will probably want to know every detail. Feel free to fashion up a beautiful narration that does your glamorous moment justice. Enjoy the camaraderie amongst your closest peeps and bask in the joy that comes with finding the one and only.
Now the dust will settle and as I mentioned earlier, the moment will pass. What’s next?
As exciting as planning a wedding can be, it can also get a little loco and feel like you just picked up a second job. It can be really easy to get carried away with all the big and little details like: guest lists, venues, DJ’s, photographers, wines, colors, bridesmaids, groomsmen and oh yeah- MONEY.
Breathe.
As an entrepreneur, there is one very important lesson I’ve learned that seems to help set the tone of the day. When it’s time to go to work, be sure to tackle the big stuff first. Everything else seems to fall into place after that. I don’t see why we can’t cross pollinate this philosophy in other areas of our lives like planning a wedding. Here are a few tips that will help you get started and eliminate some unwanted stress:
This is sort of a no brainer. Get together with your partner and decide when you would like to get married. Do you want a winter, spring, summer or fall wedding? It can be stressful to pick a date and it doesn’t help that friends and family are just dying to know when the big day is going down. Do your best to bounce off the questions with grace until you’re ready to give them an answer.
Knowing the date will guide you in picking the perfect venue. Know that venues fill up pretty quickly. The business of love is a big business and there are many players. There are all kinds of options out there. Do understand that most of the budget might go to this alone. Perhaps you might know someone who owns some land with a barn, or a building. Tap into your resources. Be creative. You don’t have to do what the crowd is doing.
This will help tremendously with the budget. This is also a good time to get on the same page with your partner about how much you want to really spend on the wedding. Some people like to go all out. Others like to keep it quaint and invest their money in other endeavors that will benefit the family in the long run. Figure out what’s right for you.
Big Stuff Out Of the Way So Now You Can Have Fun
Getting the big stuff out of the way will give you a sense of accomplishment. Why? Because it is a major accomplishment! The rest is just paint by numbers and should be nothing short of fun!
Now you get to explore what kind of tunes you want to shake your butts to and figure out who’s the perfect DJ for the job. Who knows, maybe you’ll get to test the menu of your top 3 choices of caterers? I know, sounds rough. And of course you have to find the perfect photographer that will capture the five star moments of your memorable day. Two words: Have Fun! Stick together and support each other during this process and all will align perfectly.
Through the entire process, be sure to stay true to what you both really want. After all, it is your special day. Listen to each other and try not to get frustrated . If you do find yourself getting frustrated during anytime throughout this process, take a break. Walk away and come back to it later. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work.
